A fire outbreak on Wednesday engulfed part of the wing housing the Senate at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, causing a brief disruption to legislative activities and prompting lawmakers to scramble for safety.
The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) completed the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, a nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.
Preliminary reports indicated that the fire originated from the kitchen section of the hearing room. Sources suggested that a microwave left switched on may have triggered the outbreak.
Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were said to have led swift efforts to contain the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the Senate wing.
Emergency responders and staff quickly brought the situation under control, and no casualties or injuries were reported. The prompt intervention helped avert what could have become a major incident within the National Assembly complex.
