Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South and is a 2027 governorship candidate, has voluntarily submitted himself for investigation by security agencies over allegations linking him to banditry.
The senator approached the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency following social media claims that connected him to bandit networks, a black Hilux vehicle and the presence of armed men at his residence.
At a press conference, Buba denied all the allegations, describing them as politically motivated propaganda aimed at damaging his reputation ahead of the elections. He challenged those making the claims to present concrete evidence directly to the relevant authorities.
Represented by senior lawyer Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, the senator emphasised his full cooperation with the investigation and his commitment to clearing his name.
The development has drawn mixed reactions. While some have called for a thorough and impartial probe given the serious nature of the allegations and the ongoing security challenges in northern Nigeria, others have urged caution against unverified social media claims.
